ILLEGAL immigration.
-gives the countries the immigrants are leaving NO reason to reform or grow.
ILLEGAL immigration
-creates a permanent underclass of under-paid exploited workers.
ILLEGAL immigration
-is supported by Unions, both the Democratic and Republican parties, and the Catholic Church for purely selfish reasons; increased membership, cheap labor, increased contributions.
ILLEGAL immigration
-causes mistrust, fear, contempt for law, divisiveness.
ILLEGAL immigration
-insures that illegal immigrants continue to stay in the shadows, they don't need to be treated like American citizens.
ILLEGAL immigration
-means assimilation will never occur.
ILLEGAL immigration
-is a serious national security concern.
ILLEGAL immigration
-is a slap in the face to legal immigrants.
ILLEGAL immigration
-means cheaper vegetables, room rates in hotels/motels, construction costs.

Just like ending slavery adversely effected the price of cotton, ending illegal immigration will adversely effect the price of some products. Should slavery have been allowed to continue for that reason?

How would you go about preventing illegal immigration then? I don't buy into the notion that the borders can be secure, as is what seems to be the common impulse for a solution.

Well, first, I would not PROHIBIT local law enforcement agencies from checking immigration staus when arrests are made. I don't mean simply checking people when they're pulled over for a traffic stop, but when they've been arrested for another crime.
Simply actually enforcing current laws would help a great deal.
Of course borders can never be completely secure, but the total "hands-off" approach that's prevalent now certainly isn't working towards a solution.
People repeatedly break the law because
a) it's easy
b) there are no penalties when they're caught
c) we don't seem serious about enforcing the laws anyway
d) they're desperate to leave their countries of origin because of wide-spread poverty.
Of course, working to better conditions in the countries these people are leaving would go a long way towards solving the issue.
