Fron the AP

"BERN, Switzerland – The Swiss government declared renowned film director Roman Polanski a free man on Monday after rejecting a U.S. request to extradite him on a charge of having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl."

Roman Polanski did NOT "have sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old-girl", he drugged and repeatedly raped her. It was not a case of consensual sex - which, due to her age, couldn't have happened anyay - but a brutal and repeated rape. Also, bear in mind that by accepting a plea bargain Polanski ADMITTED the much reduced charge of statutory rape was true. He then violated the terms of that plea bargain, and fled the country, meaning the original charges, of "rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under fourteen, and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor" are still pending. His flight stops the clock on the statute of limitations.

You may well respect Polanski as an artist, but what he did in 1977 is absolutely indefensible.

I think very few people actually understand what was alleged to have happened that day, and that lack of understanding is in many ways based on statements like the one the AP just made.
