“HP Lovecrafts’ Beyond the Wall of Sleep”
Jun. 9th, 2006 05:51 pmI’ve seen low-budget movies. This film, however, seemed to be entirely financed by returning pop-bottles for their deposit.
Why is it that bringing Lovecraft to the screen always appears to be the preserve of the most inarticulate and amateurish film-makers? people who, moreover, have no understanding of or respect for the source material.
Gore is no substitute for having something to SAY, people.
This film is wretched; I wouldn’t even recommend its viewing for the purposes of torture at Gitmo.

Jun. 9th, 2006 07:49 pmThe FLIP-SIDE to the horror described below was the second movie of the night; Ridley Scotts' amazing first film, "The Duellists".
A beautiful film based on a Joseph Conrad short story, wonderfully acted by Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine as the eponymous protagonists. It's a story of false honor, and the realization of true honor against the back-drop of the Napoleonic Wars. It's a sadly little-known film that gets my highest recommendation.
