The KEY to a perfect mint julep is preparing the macerated mint-water-sugar sludge properly before you add the bourbon.
You must use fresh mint, and 101 proof Wild Turkey.

FIRST,a dash of water
THEN a teaspoon of granulated sugar
THEN three large mint leaves.

Using a wooden spoon, mash all this together until a sludge occurs.
THEN add two fingers of bourbon
THEN water to taste, and ice.

THEN drink til you're a sloppy mess.
