Has it occured to anyone else that as it stands now, Joe Libermann is the most important person in the Senate?
As he was elected as an Independent, he is not beholden to either party. IF he votes with the Democrats, they have 51 votes. IF he votes with the Republicans (which is by no means impossible), it becomes a 50/50 tie and Cheney casts the deciding vote.
Let's remember that the Democrats ran a pretty smear-filled campaign against him in both the primary (where he was rejected as the Democratic candidate) and the general elections; they are probably not his favorite people right now.
What an enviable position he is in, to be able to vote his conscience unfettered by party politics.

He had said that he was going to caucus with the Dems though.

The larger larger overlooked story is that the Dems have been told to put up or shut up.

well

It very well could, though I doubt Sanders, being a Socialist, is any threat to vote with the Republicans. Liebermann MIGHT, given his stance on the war.

oh truth

plus I guess he has got kind of a track record. still I reckon he votes with his conscience, at least.

Yep-- self-described at least. Stretch of the imagination to think that that guy would caucus with the GOP.

if the man had less practicality & more nerve, he'd be openly disgusted that he has to pick the lesser of two evils to side with. it's like picking between a slow, painful death & a slower, painful death.

well, the PRACTICAL thing to do would be to see who's going to give him the best deal for his vote

depending on how you define "best deal," that might be what i'd say he should do anyway. that is, if "best deal" is defined in longterm & wide ranging perspective, the best deal is to do what he feels is right based on what is beneficial to everyone (from the aliens across the universe who mightone day conquer us to the benevolent amoebas in our colons). if "best deal" is defined on which party is gonna give him the most immediate influence, money, etc, well, we have a different pie entirely.

Gore's wife was behind the phrase "Tipper Sticker" referring to parental advisories on music albums... not-so-strange bedfellows?

When it comes down to it, I'm inclined to side with pragmatism.

If you're interested in the subject (The Russian Civil War), may I also recommend "Farewell to the Don" by H.N.H. Williamson, if you can find it.
