Interestingly, I remember reading about an early "heretical" sect, the name of which I can't recall, that honored Judas as being the instrument of God. They argued that without Judas, the Passion and Resurrection of Christ wouldn't have happened.
If anyone can provide the name of that sect, I'd be obliged.

that's a common myth in gnostic sects who would view judas as an agent of sophia working against the demiurge.

if you haven't read it, St Ireneaus's Adversus Haereses goes into a lot of those early gnostic heresies in detail.
