CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Jazeera aired an audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden on Thursday, saying al-Qaida is making preparations for attacks in the United States but offering a truce to build Iraq and Afghanistan.
The voice in the tape said heightened security measures in the United States are not the reason there have been no attacks there since Sept. 11, 2001. Instead, the reason is "because there are operations that need preparations, and you will see them," he said.
"Based on what I have said, it is better not to fight the Muslims on their land," he said. "We do not mind offering you a truce that is fair and long-term. ... So we can build Iraq and Afghanistan ... there is no shame in this solution because it prevents wasting of billions of dollars ... to merchants of war."
The speaker did not give conditions for a truce in the excerpts aired by Al-Jazeera.
And now, my considered and measured response; Are you ready?
BULLSHIT
Nice tactic to give the anti-war camp another arrow for their quiver, so to speak. "Bin Laden wants to NEGOTIATE! It's only the American war-mongers that are keeping the war going", etc.
Hitler wanted peace. A piece of Russia, a piece of Czechoslovakia, a piece of France...you get the picture.
The "War on Terror" will not be ended by negotiation. It will end when and if the popular support for terrorists has ended.

PS we should have been encouraging domcratic movements in nations for the last 60 years. Instead we propped up regional strongmen whose only asset was being anti-communist. We didn't do that and now we're paying the price for the generations of mistrust and hatred that policy engendered.

also yr PS is so spot on.
that's the part that makes me really pissed about all this, they portray it like they are the great cowboys of liberation when in reality they are just half assedly cleaning up their own messes.
the arabs remember who funded these twats in the first place, you better believe it. that's why they are just like, "get the fuck out!" at this point. every time we come into their world we leave it more fucked up than we found it, starting with the crusades and moving into the colonialist era, then the cold war crap that lead to Bushes on and two doing their funky li'l wars there.
we are responsible for Israel being there, we are responsible for Ghadafi, Bin Laden, and Sadam + a whole host of ghouls worldwide, and then we blame it on "Islam" like it was Islam that sold them arms and put them in power.
nuh uh.
NUH UH.
and i mean, we've supposedly had democracy here for years and that hasn't stopped the rise to power of radical warmongering Christan fundamentalists.
has it?

Date: 1/20/06 01:11 am (UTC)ONE thing I'm hopeful about; maybe, just maybe we've turned that corner to where now we'll start encouraging deomcracy. I hope so.
Maybe, even though US democracy isn't perfect by a LONG shot, maybe something we start might grow into that?
I don't believe for a second that ANY people "aren't ready for democracy". People are ready for it; people will find their own way with it. We can't expect it to be a carbon copy of our form of democracy, nor should we. Are we strong enough, mature enough, intelligent enough, HUMAN enough to just give people the tools and let them build their own house? That house will be different than ours, maybe strange to us, maybe it won't even seem like a proper house to us at all. But the house has to fit the ground, not the other way around.
The point needs to be that they're free people making choices for themselves; I can live with that.
*shrug*

we aren't even ready for when we don't like how people choose things in our own country.
i dunno though, i'm smeeling a new zeitgeist on the horizon.
and this next one may be much more fun the the "industrial revolution" one.
and healthier. it'll still have it's bad stuff and powerplays and whatnot, but i dunno, i think things are gunna end up alot more balanced.
hope is cool.
i've been Captian Grumpus lately for some reason. already told you that though.

ah i finally asked that guy if he wanted to hang out. after like months of me being weird about it. he's a little mad, i don't blame him, and i'm suprised he was even still giving a shit, but i dunno. we will see.
i just had lots of crap to sort out that i didn't know was even there till he poked me in it.
you know how that is?
i think i'm concious enough of it now that i will work it out with him rather than on him, so it's ok.
i dunno, takes two to tangle, i'm gunna not write scripts and just see where he is at and where i'm at and then just be present and see what happens.
blah blah blah....
