A Public Service Announcement
Feb. 7th, 2017 11:00 amThere is an important thing to remember about Holocaust deniers. They are NOT simply people who have "weighed the evidence and come up with a different point of view".
They are liars who KNOW the Holocaust happened-are HAPPY that it happened, but try to sow doubt in a pathetic attempt to legitimize their anti-Semitic hatred or other odious political beliefs. PERIOD
I would no more engage in debate with them than I would with people who claimed WWI "never happened".

Feb. 6th, 2017 09:14 amRoper: So now you'd give the Devil benefit of law!
More: Yes. What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?
Roper: I'd cut down every law in England to do that!
More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you — where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country's planted thick with laws from coast to coast — man's laws, not God's — and if you cut them down — and you're just the man to do it — d'you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake.

Feb. 5th, 2017 08:31 amA lot of people are drawing parallels between current events and Germany in 1933. People talk about Nazi Germany as if it were a monolithic entity that had total control over its people. In many ways, that's true, but there are two very important things to remember about that time; the Rosenstrasse Protest, and the Edelweiss Pirates. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosenstrasse_protest
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edelweiss_Pirates
There were other resistance events, other people who fought Hitler from the start, but both of these show that NO government, no tyranny, however strong, can truly make its people conform to its will.
These are also important because both were made up of women or children, two groups that historically have had no voice, and certainly had none in Hitler's Germany.

Jan. 29th, 2017 07:07 pmNot like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
-Emma Lazarus
"Mother of Exiles"...has a nice ring to it.

Jan. 29th, 2017 08:30 amThere are no newspapers here, no televisions, and above all no computers, which means no damned Internet. Dugumbe forbids it all. His explanation for this stance is simple, though no less profound for its simplicity: information, he insists, is not knowledge. The lessons passed on from one's elders, taught by the wisest of them but recorded only in the mind, these, Dugumbe has always said, represent true knowledge. The media I've mentioned can only divert a man from such wisdom and enslave him to what Dugumbe calls the worst of all devils: confusion. There was a time when I—a man of the West, the possessor of not one but two doctorates—would have laughed at and disdained such beliefs; and in truth, during the time I've been here the laws and folklore of these people have come to trouble me deeply. Yet in a world stuffed full of deliberately warped information, of manufactured "truths" that have ignited conflicts far greater than Dugumbe's tribal struggles, I now find myself clinging to the core of the old king's philosophy even more tightly than he does.
For this is the greatest truth of our age: information is not knowledge.

Jan. 23rd, 2017 08:14 amLet me make one thing very clear first off; I am NOT, in any way, a supporter of our new president. I have many, many issues with him, and his policies. You will see me be highly critical of him and his policies. You will not, however, see me make snide and snarky "funny" attacks on his wife or children. You will NOT hear me say "not my president", because, in fact, he is. Too many people condone these sort of attacks by saying, "Well, look at what people have said about Obama, or his family, now the tables have turned, we're justified in saying them about Trump and his family".
No, just no.
You're acting like children. It doesn't matter what the "other side" has done, we're NOT "the other side". Be better than your opponents, otherwise, what's the difference between you? You ARE NOT defending Obama with these tactics. Neither he, nor his family has ASKED you to act like this. If anyone in the world is justified in making these sort of attacks, it would be the former president. You'll note he has not. He has acted in a dignified, statesman-like manner, being above petty insults. Be like the man you claim to be "defending", Prove you're better than your opponents by BEING better than your opponents.
Fight Trump on the issues, not by acting like five year-olds

Did anyone notice the article in the newspaper today about the church arson case, the one that got all the attention on Facebook with tons of outrage and many, many re-posts? You know, the one where the arsonist painted "Trump for President" on the church? Turns out it was a church member who torched the place, not rabid Trump supporters. Did you see all the Facebook posts about the results of the investigation?
I'm not surprised if you didn't notice, as the article was buried on the bottom of page 8, and NO-ONE has posted about it on Facebook.
It fit SO WELL with the image of Trump supporters so many people had in their minds, no-one questioned it. So what if it wasn't true?
