Frankly, the "excuse" that "the Marines thought it was a symbol for 'Scout Sniper' and were not aware of any other symbolism" is an insult to my intelligence.
That picture is an insult to the US military as a whole, and to the Marine Corps itself. It turns my stomach.

I may be lacking perspective because I didn't know that was a Nazi flag when I saw it, either. But for ten in the unit to not know... I don't know. That's harder to believe. How'd they find the flag, then, in the first place?

I watch a bit of History Channel myself, but I don't watch it regularly, no. If nothing else, I know that never came up in my history courses in school, that flag.
