Wilhelm Meister´s Lehrjahre by Mr. Goethe. All three of them and in thick german too, but it felt like at least seven or so til my figure Mignon that I was looking for due to having found her as "Tintomara" by swedish Almqvist in The Queen´s Jewelry (Drottningens Juvelsmycke) finally turned up: only to die at once. The second longest book I ever tried to finish but failed at was Thomas Mann´s Der Zauberberg which was even more boring. Then there was Hugo´s Les Miserables which almost got me lynched at school because I had recommended it at exciting what with live burial and all of the hero but class was bored after book I and I shall never forgive Hugo for that. This is why I refuse to speak to the self-acclaimed "intellectual" who always appears at my fav. bars with his one book: Hugo´s bloody poetry. There is a limit to everything. Oh, but you might try Hesse´s Glass Bead Game off course...
