Lack of charity, or too-keen perception?
Jan. 3rd, 2011 10:39 amI'm watching "Greenberg" when it occurs to me "I don't like Ben Stiller's character, and there's no reason I should. Sure he's 'damaged', but so the fuck what? we are ALL damaged. That doesn't excuse anything. Are we supposed to empathize with or pity the character?"
Maybe I'm just a prick, but I'm tired of people going on about how "damaged" they are and how that excuses everything they do, every hurt they inflict.
There has to be more to someone than just that; there has to be some good in them, some balance. Everyone I know and like has that balance, everyone I don't like doesn't, or at least I can't see it.
Which of course leads to the thought, "Is it my lack of perception, or is it truly them? Do I not see enough, or too much?"
I don't know the answer to that
