I thought they were the ones to root for in the Spanish Civil War, although they were squashed pretty quick like fleas. I think they're impact on everyone from Hemmingway to Chomsky is still felt to this day. Unlike say, the legacy of the Trump and O'Donnells of this world.
yep. sorry. Hollywood, and it's monsters, could not exist anywhere else but Cali.
really tho i'm just giving you shit, i know where you live has very little to do with Hollywood and L.A. and all that. although, it does have more to do with it than where i live does. ;) yr in the North right? so yr hood is all about hyphy.
you could make an easy case that hyphy and Lindsey come from the same root though.
i'm talking about that Pan-Cali attatude. you prolly don't even notice it cuz yr from there, but when i go out there, wether i'm in L.A. or San Fran, or Sacramento, i feel it.
it's like this kind of blah-zay casual coolness over habitual hostility and a need to grandstand and battle, but in a way that is ironically over the top and super casually on-committal at the same time. it least that's how it reads to someone from the southern mid-atantic like myself.
and from here, things like Hollywood party culture, hyphy, and Chet Baker are all connected by it. and maybe that origional Hippie culture too.
i am so stoked on the novel. Mist was indeed the one book i wanted more than all the rest, so...rad! and throwing in the Manics is a bonus, a generous gift to be sure. thanks joe! you made my week and that is despite the fact today is the first day of winter vacation.
It's not just the mediocrity. It's the idea that mediocrity is somehow praise-worthy, what people SHOULD be, and that anyone who tries to rise above it is either pretentious or somehow trying to keep everyone else down.

Date: 12/23/06 05:23 am (UTC)the whole phenomenon reinforces my theory about this being the second Dark Ages.
the part that trips me out is the whole aesthetic and politic of the exeptionally mediocre.
