Debra LaFave
Sep. 13th, 2006 07:06 amI'm surprised, thought not really so, by the attitude I've seen in various places about the Debra LaFave woman in particular, and molestation of boys in general.
There is a sniggering locker-room feel to the whole thing, as though the fact that since the woman in question is attractive, the 14 year old boy she molested was more "lucky" than anything else.
Need I remind people that consent is NOT an issue in statutory rape? Children cannot, legally, give consent to a sexual act with an adult; therefore all such acts are rape.
What disturbs me most about this is the idea that some people can't rape, and that some people cannot BE raped. Rape can happen to anyone.
What about a 14 year old girl and an older man she finds attractive? is THAT statutory rape? yes, it is.
Most of the people who find this situation humorous would have a VASTLY different attitude is it was a 14 year old boy and an older man.
CHILDREN need to be protected, regardless of the particulars.
