SAD SAD SAD

*sigh*
I dunno. I was just having a conversation elsewhere with someone (I'm being purposely vague). They said "You know, I don't read gay authors over 40; they really have nothing so say about my life. With them, it's all about sad coming-out stories and AIDS. It doesn't speak to me and my life."
Leaving aside, for the moment, that he's also saying he doesn't think ANYONE over 40 is relevant to him, that is the most stupid and self-destructive attitude I can think of.

Because it hasn't been HIS experience, he can't possibly learn anything by hearing these stories.

That, my friends, is one of the WORST aspects of the gay "community"; the profound marginalization of 4/5ths of the community by the other 1/5th. Only young and beautiful people matter, you know. I know this is in no way confined to the gay community, everyone seems to do it. The difference is, in the gay community, a supposedly "inclusive and diverse" community, not listening to the lessons learned by those who've gone before you can result in a death sentence. Thousands of gay men every year are diagnosed with HIV, most of them under 30; thousands more die. "It CAN'T happen to me, or to my friends" is the most blindly stupid attitude imaginable.

Vacuousness kills.
