Fifty years from now, when the history of this period is written, I believe this week will be seen as one of the most critical junctures in the struggle against pan-Islamic Theocracy. The shift in al-Qaedas tactics in Iraq, coupled with their repudiation by Hamas, sees al-Qaeda at their lowest ebb in recent years. This could be used by their enemies as a great opportunity to turn the tide of popular support against al-Qaeda. The repudiation of al-Qaeda by non-Western aligned Islamic governments may well spell their doom if their enemies can capitalize on it. The message that al-Qaeda doesn't care how many Muslims are killed in their bid for world domination needs to be forcefully advanced by these nations. It is critical that this message come from within the Islamic world.
The worst thing that the United States could possibly do at this time is lessen their support for the fledgling Iraqi democracy. The message that al-Qaeda is formenting civil war in Iraq to serve their own ends regardless of how many Muslims die needs to be repeated over and over by the Iraqi government until the Iraqi people realize they are being used. When the Iraqi people, and the people of the Islamic world as a whole, begin to understand that al-Qaeda would rather see them dead than living in freedom, the tide of popular support will turn. Without this support, al-Qaeda cannot survive.
